Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – Northwest Conference
women's soccer scoring co-leader Stephanie Skelly struck
again Saturday afternoon here at the Austin Sports Complex,
knocking home two goals and adding an assist as the visiting
Willamette University Bearcats blanked the George Fox University
Bruins 3-0 to complete a sweep of their two-game season series.
Skelly, who had entered the day tied with Amy Hasson of Whitman
College for the most points in the NWC, each with 13 goals and two
assists, picked up an assist on the first goal of the game.
In a scramble for a loose ball in the middle of the penalty box,
she settled under a kick that had been deflected into the air and
headed it to Ariel Wilson, who was staked out near the right
post. Wilson then angled a shot back to the left side of the
net for her second goal of the season 10 minutes into the first
half.
With four minutes left in the opening period, Skelly notched her
first goal of the day by sending in a shot to the middle of the net
from only three yards away following a short cross from Paige
Lancourt. Though the shots were even in the first half at six
apiece, the Bearcats took a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
Skelly and Wilson teamed up again for the Bearcats'
second-half score. Wilson, racing in from the right with the
ball, sent a pass ahead to Skelly, who was driving into the box,
and the Willamette scoring ace shot from the right into the left
corner from 15 yards out for her 15th goal of the year at the 51:42
mark.
Willamette, which had defeated George Fox 4-0 in the first
meeting on Oct. 2 behind a pair of goals by Skelly, ended up with a
15-12 edge in shots, 10-5 in shots on goal. The Bruins held
an advantage in corner kick chances, 4-2. Skelly led the
Bearcats with four shot attempts, while Cassady
Gardner paced the Bruins with three shots, two on
goal.
Gina Barbieri made five saves in posting the Bearcat
shutout. Alyssa Montero made seven stops in goal for the
Bruins.
With the win, Willamette improved to 10-6-1 overall and 9-3-1 in
the conference, climbing into second place in the league
standings. George Fox slipped to 2-10-5 overall and 2-8-3 in
the NWC.
