Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – Scoring the only goal of
the game on a well-executed play in the 70th minute, the George Fox
University Bruins picked up a 1-0 Northwest Conference
women's soccer win over the visiting Lewis & Clark
College Pioneers on Homecoming Day Saturday afternoon here at the
Austin Sports Complex.
With both defenses yielding little in the way of close shots,
the Bruins finally broke through at the 70:15 mark in the second
half. Melanie Gaither, who leads the Bruins with six goals
scored, beat her defender on a drive outside the left side of the
box and angled a low cross to Lela Stockley, who
had just entered the game and was coming to the inside of the
box. Stockley quickly shot the ball past charging Pioneer
keeper Elise Delgado inside the far post for her first goal of the
season and the game-winner.
George Fox finished with an 11-8 edge in total shots and a 6-3
advantage in shots on goal. Alyssa Montero went the distance
in goal and earned the shutout with three saves. Geena Fong
played the first half in goal for Lewis & Clark and had four
saves, while Delgado had one save for the Pios in the second
half.
