Box Score PORTLAND, Ore. – Raquel
McNeff scored the only goal of the game in the first half and the
Lewis & Clark College Pioneers hung on for a 1-0 win over the
visiting George Fox University Bruins in their home finale, a
rain-soaked Northwest Conference women's soccer match
Wednesday night here at Griswold Stadium.
On a night when scoring opportunities were at a premium, the
Pioneers capitalized on one of those rare openings at the 33:50
mark of the initial period. McNeff got free following a cross
from Sarah Breninger and sent it home for her second score of the
season, giving the Pios a 1-0 lead which they took into the
halftime.
The Pios made that one-goal lead stand up the rest of the way,
despite the Bruins taking five shots to only two for the home team
during the second half. In the end, the game was rather
evenly contested as Lewis & Clark held only a 10-8 edge in
shots, and 6-3 in shots on goal. The Pios also took three
corner kicks to one for the Bruins.
Geena Fong made three saves in earning the shutout for the
Pios. Alyssa Montero kept the Bruins close
by making five stops in goal for George Fox.
George Fox fell to 2-12-5 overall and 2-10-3 in the conference
with the setback, which left the Bruins with a split in the season
series with the Pioneers. It was their 14th contest of the
season to go down as either a tie or a one-goal decision, one short
of the team record of 15 ties or one-goal games in 2005. The
Bruins have also gone eight straight games without a win, going
0-5-3 in that stretch. Lewis & Clark improved to 3-14-2
overall and 2-12-1 in the NWC, snapping an eight-game losing streak
in the process.
NEXT: George Fox closes its season Friday at
home against Pacific Lutheran University at 12:00 noon. The
Bruins will recognize their five graduating seniors in pre-game
ceremonies: Becka Doyle, Shannon Olson, Katelyn Peer, Cori Jo
Young, and Cassady Gardner ... Lewis & Clark winds up its
season Friday on the road at the University of Puget Sound, also at
12:00 noon.
