TACOMA, Wash. - Josiah
Jackson won both his singles and his doubles matches, the
only George Fox University individual to sweep, lifting the
visiting Bruins past the Pacific Lutheran University Lutes for the
first time ever 5-4 in a Northwest Conference men's tennis
match Sunday here at the University of Puget Sound's indoor
tennis pavilion.
The Bruins dropped the No. 1 doubles match as the Lutes'
Taylor Dickey and Scott Sheldon won 8-3 over Scott Barnett and
Preston Mann, but Jackson and doubles partner Peter Brown evened
the match with an 8-4 victory over Neal Berg and Zack AhYat.
The Bruins then went ahead with a win at No. 3 doubles, Justin
McClain and Andy Tweet dispatching Reed Gunstone and Michael
Parretta 8-2.
The Bruins won the odd-numbered singles matches as Barnett
downed Dickey 6-2, 6-4 at No. 1, Mann edged AhYat 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) at
No. 3, and Jackson came through with a 6-2, 6-4 decision over Berg
at No. 5. PLU got wins from Sheldon over Brown 6-1, 3-6, 7-5
at No. 2, Daniel Cotton over McClain 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4, and
Gunstone over Tweet 6-1, 6-4 at No. 6.
“Josiah came through big-time for us today,” said
Bruins coach Neal Ninteman,” winning his doubles and then
clinching the match for us with his singles win. It was a
tight match all the way, and to pull it out shows the tremendous
character of this very young team. I think this may be the
first time we have ever swept both UPS and PLU in the same
season.”
Actually, a quick search of George Fox records indicate that,
since the introduction of men's tennis to the campus in 1996,
this is the first season the Bruins have beaten either team from
the Tacoma area.
