PORTLAND, Ore. - With an 8-1
victory over the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers in a Northwest
Conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon here at the
L&C Tennis Dome, the rapidly-improving George Fox University
Bruins equaled their victory total for all of last year with their
fifth win of the season.
George Fox is now 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
The 2009-10 team went 5-16 overall and 2-14 in the league, but the
Bruins have already doubled last year's wins total in NWC
play. Lewis & Clark fell to 0-8 overall and 0-7 in the
conference.
The Bruins opened the match by cruising through the
doubles. Peter Brown and Josiah Jackson downed George Allen
and Quinn Roth-Carter 8-3 at No. 1, Preston Mann
and Justin McClain captured an 8-1 win at No. 2 over Kerry White
and Sam Franer, and Nolan Staples and Pax Magaway put away Cole
Pfeiffer and Muneeb Khan 8-3 at No. 3.
In singles, the Bruins took the top five matches. Mann
outlasted Allen 7-6 (12-10), 6-2 at No. 1; McClain rousted
Roth-Carter 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2; Brown beat Pfeiffer 6-1, 6-1 at No.
3; Jackson whitewashed White 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4; and Andy Tweet
topped Franer 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5. The Pioneers' only win
came at No. 6 as Khan conquered Jake Larson 6-2, 6-2.
“Preston played No. 1 for the first time and had a big
win,” noted George Fox coach Neal Ninteman. “He
fought off seven set points in the first set before pulling off the
tiebreaker - an impressive win. Everyone else played very
well, including Jake Larson in his first action at No. 6, though he
didn't win. He's worked as hard as everyone else
and deserved his shot.”
NEXT: George Fox, now tied for third in the
conference standings, steps outside the NWC to host Hardin-Simmons
University from Abilene, Texas, Monday at 1:00 p.m. on the GFU
campus courts (or at Tualatin Hills Tennis Center in Beaverton,
Ore., if the weather is bad) ... Lewis & Clark travels to Los
Angeles, Calif., to play next Saturday at the California Institute
of Technology at 10:00 a.m. and at the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps
