Box Score ORANGE, Calif. - Two goals
apiece by Melanie Gaither of George Fox University
and Kate Lilly of Chapman University, followed by 61 minutes of
scoreless play, resulted in a 2-2 double-overtime tie between the
visiting Bruins and the home-standing Panthers in a non-conference
women's soccer match Monday night here at Wilson Field.
The Panthers jumped on the board quickly, scoring their first
goal of the season at the 3:45 mark as Lilly took a pass from Aimee
Evans along the right wing and found the lower left corner of the
net for her 20th career goal and first of the season. That
lead held until the 28th minute when Gaither pocketed her first
goal of the season to even the score off a pass from Corin
Beaudry.
However, the Panthers responded a mere 18 seconds later.
Immediately following the kickoff, Lilly scored her second
goal of the game, unassisted, and Chapman regained a 2-1 advantage
which they maintained until halftime. The goal gave Lilly 52 career
points, moving her into a tie for 10th all-time in Chapman
history.
Four minutes into the second half, Gaither scored again, this
time with an assist from Shannon Olson, to make it 2-2. It
was to be the final goal of the game as the teams battled on
scoreless terms through 41 more minutes and 20 minutes of overtime
play.
Chapman had its chances, out-shooting the Bruins 28-11 in the
game, including 7-0 during the two overtimes, but Bruin goalie
Alyssa Montero held the Panthers in check, turning away 10 shots
for saves, three in overtime. The Panthers' Rissa
Anderson faced 11 shots and made four saves in goal, two in each
half of regulation.
