GEORGE FOX 3, LEWIS & CLARK 1: Bruins Win as Outside Hitters Pummel Pioneers

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. – Outside hitters Erin Campbell and Lucy Capron combined for 25 kills and 24 digs, leading the George Fox University Bruins offensively and defensively to a 3-1 win (25-16, 17-25, 25-15, 25-18) over the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers in Northwest Conference women's volleyball Wednesday night here at the Pamplin Sports Center.

In the first set, Kateleya Milan had kills for the first two points for the Pios, but the Bruins bounced back with five straight, Cassie Irwin collecting two kills in that run.  The set stayed tight at 7-7, 8-8, 9-9, and 10-10 before the Bruins took the lead for good on a kill by Capron, and extended it to 22-13 with a 12-3 outburst.  Capron had two kills and served four winning points in that run.  The Bruins held the Pios to a .000 hitting percentage in the set.

The home team turned the tables on the visitors in the second set as Lewis & Clark limited George Fox to a .000 hitting mark.  The first half was close, with neither team holding more than a two-point lead, until the Pios scored six unanswered points to extend a slim 12-11 advantage to a more comfortable 18-11 margin.  Milan closed out the Pios' lone win of the night with a winner.

The Bruins regained momentum by again holding the Pioneers to a .000 hitting percentage while torching the net with a .438 attack percentage (15-1-32) in the third set.  George Fox trailed only briefly, at 0-1 and 1-2, before Chelsea Wilson served six winning points in a row, Campbell collecting three kills in that stretch, to take an 11-4 lead.  The Pios got no closer than five points the rest of the set, and Capron closed it out with a spike.

In the final stanza, the Bruins broke a 7-7 tie on a Pioneer service error and led the remainder of the match.  L&C was still within striking distance, down only three at 17-14, when a 6-0 run that was capped by a Campbell service ace built the Bruin lead to 23-14.  Tiffany Burk had the match-ending kill for the Bruins.

Campbell had 13 kills and 11 digs, while Capron added 12 kills and 13 digs for the Bruins.  Wilson led all players with 22 digs.  Payton Shrum handed out 31 assists, and Capron kept her NWC lead in service aces with three more out of the Bruins' total of eight.  Shrum and Kylee Adderson had three block assists each.

Milan paced the Pios with 13 kills and Jennifer Dowdy chipped in with 10.  Leia Matsunaga fed them with 25 assists and had a team-high 16 digs.  Elena Hoff and Erinn Winstead added 15 and 10 digs respectively.  Alicia Callejo-Black contributed four block assists.

NEXT: George Fox (8-8, NWC 6-3), now in fourth place in the conference, hosts Pacific University (7-9, NWC 6-2), which is tied for second, Friday at 7:00 p.m. ... Lewis & Clark (6-12, NWC 2-7) hosts Linfield College Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
