Box Score McMINNVILLE, Ore. – Led
by Lucy Capron's career-high 20 kills, a
trio of George Fox University outside hitters posted double figures
in kills as the Bruins completed a season sweep of their Northwest
Conference women's volleyball series with the Linfield
College Wildcats in a 3-1 win (25-22, 25-27, 25-18, 25-16) Saturday
night here at Ted Wilson Gym.
Joining Capron in the Bruins' hit parade were Erin
Campbell with 14 kills and Cassie Irwin with 10. Payton Shrum
set up the offense with 40 assists. On defense, Chelsea
Wilson led a quintet of Bruins in double-digit digs with 31,
followed by Capron with 20, Campbell with 15, Irwin with 12, and
Shrum with 11. Shrum and Adderson had three block assists
each.
Linfield got 14 kills from Kailana Ritte-Camara and 10 from
Victoria Thompson, with Audrey Frazier handing out 27
assists. Courtney Uyeda made 25 digs, Courtney Wanamaker 22,
and Frazier 19. Thompson contributed four block assists.
With Linfield committing a slew of errors and George Fox finding
openings left and right, the Bruins led the first set from start to
finish, building up a 15-7 lead. Ritte-Camara had three
straight kills in the midst of a 14-7 rally that pulled the
Wildcats within one at 22-21. The teams traded points on a
kill by Campbell and a bad Bruin set, but a winner from Capron and
a Linfield attack error gave the opening round to the visitors.
The second set was tight throughout, with 11 ties and five lead
changes. George Fox built an early 4-1 lead on kills by
Campbell, Shrum and Adderson, and eventually stretched it to 17-13
on a winner by Campbell. Consecutive kills by Shayli Coppock,
Leimomi Hookano, Thompson, and Hookano again lifted Linfield to a
17-17 tie, but they could not take the lead and fell behind 24-21
after a kill by Campbell and a service ace by Wilson. The
Wildcats survived with four straight points, a pair of blocks
bracketing two winners by Ritte-Camara, before a spike by Irwin
evened it one last time at 25-25. Ritte-Camara nailed two
winners, however, to even the series 1-1.
In the third set, the Bruins reeled off eight straight points
behind Adderson's serving and six Linfield attack errors, two
of them Bruin blocks, for an 11-4 lead. They extended the
margin to 15-6 on a Capron service ace before the Wildcats made an
8-2 run, capped by a pair of Bethany Dickey kills, to get within
three at 17-14. The Bruins closed with an 8-4 run, however,
that included three Linfield attack errors, two serving errors, and
a bad set.
Down 4-3 in the fourth set, the Bruins ripped off six points in
a row with Campbell serving for a 9-4 lead and never looked
back. The George Fox margin eventually hit 11 when another
Linfield hitting error made it 22-11 Bruins, and they closed out
the match as Capron hammered home the final two points.
