Box Score PARKLAND, Wash. – In a matchup of
Northwest Conference women's soccer teams that had already
played a combined total of 10 overtime games this fall, the Pacific
Lutheran University Lutes edged the George Fox University Bruins
1-0 Saturday afternoon here at East Field - in the
naturally-to-be-expected second overtime period.
PLU entered the match with five overtimes on the season, all in
conference play and all resulting in ties. George Fox had
five games that had gone into overtime, tying two and losing
three.
Most of Saturday's match was played in the middle of the
field, as neither offense could really get going and shots were at
a premium. PLU took nine shots total in regulation, with
three on goal, while George Fox managed seven shots but only one
that had a chance of going in. In the overtimes, the Bruins
got four shots, two on goal, and the Lutes had two shots, with one
on goal - but that turned out to be enough.
Midway through the second extra period, Brenna Sussman began the
Lutes' winning play when she passed the ball to Laura Larson,
who received it with her back to the goal. Spinning on her
defender, she hit a left-footed rocket from just outside the
penalty area past diving Bruin goalkeeper Alyssa
Montero and into the far side netting for her sixth score
of the season at the 104:58 mark.
Montero and PLU keeper Marisa Gonzalez each made three saves in
the stellar defensive battle, Gonzalez earning her fourth shutout
of the season. Larson and Samantha Benner took three shots
each for the Lutes, while Michelle Young led the Bruins with four
shots attempted. PLU held a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
