VANCOUVER, Wash. – Although the results
were the same as the first time they played an NCAA Division I
opponent this season, the George Fox University Bruins gave a good
account of themselves once again in a 7-0 loss to the Portland
State University Vikings in men's tennis action Sunday
afternoon here at the Club Green Meadows courts.
In the opening round of doubles, which Division I counts as just
one point toward the team score, the Vikings posted wins by Mitch
Somach and Alec Marx over the Bruins' Shawn
Aldrich and David Munoz 8-5 at No. 1,
Roman Margoulis and Abhinav Mishra over Peter Brown and Justin
McClain 8-1 at No. 2, and Zach Lubek and Nick Fracchia over Preston
Mann and Drew Milton 8-5 at No. 3.
In singles, Margoulis defeated Mann 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1; Mishra
edged Aldrich 7-6 (7-0), 6-3 at No. 2; Somach stopped McClain 7-6
(7-2), 6-3 at No. 3; Marx measured Milton 6-0, 6-1 at No. 4; Lubek
topped Munoz 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5; and Fracchia downed Collin
Hammagren 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6.
“We didn't win any, but we played a competitive
match against a good upper-level opponent,” noted George Fox
coach Neal Ninteman. “Our top three singles and two of
our doubles acquitted themselves quite well, and I'm proud of
the effort the whole team gave. It was a fun match for our
guys to play.”
NEXT: George Fox (2-4) returns to Division III
play and Northwest Conference action Friday with a 6:00 p.m. match
at the University of Puget Sound ... Portland State (2-7) will play
a neutral-site match Saturday against Montana State
University-Billings in Bozeman, Montana, at 12:00 noon.
