Box Score SALEM, Ore. – History repeated itself in
heart-breaking fashion for the George Fox University women's
soccer team Sunday afternoon here at Sparks Field as the Willamette
University Bearcats handed the Bruins their second 1-0
double-overtime Northwest Conference loss in as many days, this
time scoring with only three seconds left.
On Saturday in Newberg, it was the Lewis & Clark College
Pioneers who had tormented the snake-bitten Bruins, scoring with
two minutes left in the second extra period to avoid a 0-0
tie. On Sunday, it was Sarah Desautels' corner kick
that was headed into the upper left corner of the net by Jill
Phillips only 0:03 away from a tie that disappointed the
Bruins.
As has been their situation most of the year due to various
injuries at times to key offensive personnel, the Bruins were
out-gunned by the opposition, this time 36-5 in total shots, 15-3
in shots on goal, and 9-1 in corner kicks by the Bearcats.
Hannah Harder led the Bruins with two shot
attempts, one of them hitting the crossbar in the 86th minute that
narrowly missed giving the visitors the lead, while Michelle Young,
Tenlee Holser, and Becca Allen all had shots on track that were
stopped by Willamette keeper Nicole Price.
Led by Desautels' 13 attempts, six on goal, the Bearcats
applied constant pressure to the George Fox defense, which has
grown stronger as the season has gone on in keeping the Bruins
close in most games. Goalie Alyssa Montero had her fifth game
of the season with double-digit saves and second in a row, this
time making 13 stops.
George Fox fell to 3-10-1 overall and 1-8-1 in conference play
as the Bruins endured their record-tying 11th shutout of the
season. Willamette, which evened the season series with the
Bruins after George Fox had defeated them 2-1 on Oct. 5, improved
to 4-9-2 overall and 2-7-2 in the NWC.
NEXT: George Fox goes to Pacific Lutheran
University in Parkland, Wash., and Willamette visits the University
of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Wash., on Saturday, both games starting
at 12:00 noon.
