Box Score TACOMA, Wash. – A pair of second-half
goals four minutes apart by the University of Puget Sound offset a
last-minute goal by George Fox University, enabling the Loggers to
sneak past the visiting Bruins 2-1 and keep pace with
league-leading Linfield College in a critical Northwest Conference
women's soccer match Sunday afternoon here at East Field.
After a scoreless first half in which Puget Sound out-shot
George Fox 9-2, the Loggers broke through with two tallies early in
the second half. Robin Vieira took a shot that bounced off
the post, but collected her own rebound and put it back in for her
third goal of the season at 47:40 to give the Loggers the lead.
Shortly thereafter, at 51:33, it was Amalia Acorda-Fey scoring
for the first time this season when she finished inside the left
post off a cross from 15 yards out by Kylie Beeson. That goal
proved to be the game-winner when the Bruins spoiled the potential
shutout with a score only 13 seconds from the end, Tenlee
Holser notching her first career goal with a long-distance
blast that deflected off the hands of second-half keeper Lauren
Thomas and into the net.
The Loggers finished with a 21-3 advantage in total shots, 8-3
in shots on goal, and 6-0 in corner kicks. George Fox goalie
Alyssa Montero went the distance and made six saves. Casey
Thayer worked the first half in the net for the Loggers and made
two saves, while Thomas got the win in the second half but had no
saves.
George Fox, which had battled UPS to a 0-0 double-overtime
standoff in Newberg on Sept. 28 despite being out-shot 51-5, fell
to 3-12-1 overall and 1-10-1 in the conference. Puget Sound
improved to 11-2-2 overall and 9-1-2 in the NWC with its ninth
straight win, remaining two points behind Linfield, which won a 3-2
double-overtime game over Whitworth University.
