Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – Combining for 27 kills
and a .439 hitting percentage, George Fox University outside
hitters Erin Campbell and Erin Sprowls put on a
powerful offensive display to pace the Bruins to a 3-0 sweep
(25-16, 25-20,25-17) of the Linfield College Wildcats in Northwest
Conference women's volleyball action Friday night here at the
Wheeler Sports Center's Miller Gym.
Campbell, a junior right-hander, had a match-high 16 kills and
only two errors in 37 attempts for a .378 percentage, while
Sprowls, a freshman lefty, hammered 11 kills with no errors in 20
attacks for a blistering .550 mark. Led by that dynamic duo,
the Bruins as a team nearly doubled the number of kills mustered by
their Yamhill County rivals, George Fox hitting .262 (49 kills and
16 errors in 126 attempts) to .068 (25 kills and 17 errors in 117
attempts) for Linfield.
The Bruins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set with kills
by Sprowls and Campbell around a service ace by Brooke Sturdevant
and never trailed. Sturdevant added another ace and Campbell
three more kills in a 4-0 run that boosted the Bruins to a 15-8
lead, and the Wildcats got no closer than five points the rest of
the way. Kills by Sprowls and Campbell completed the
Bruins' win in the opener.
Linfield had a pair of early one-point leads in the second set,
but the Bruins broke an 8-8 tie on a kill by Tiffany Burk, and
Karlee Jo Sampson added a pair of winners as the home team moved
ahead 13-8. The 'Cat rallied with a 5-0 run of their
own to tie it 16-16, fueled by a kill and an ace by Kailana
Ritte-Camara, but a Linfield attack error and two winners by
Campbell put the Bruins back in front for good. Sampson hit
winners for each of the Bruins' final three points in the
set.
In the final set, the Bruins took a 6-2 lead, keyed by a pair of
blocks by Burk with Sprowls and Campbell, and they led the rest of
the match. The Wildcats were within two at 12-10, but a pair
of kills by Sampson and one by Campbell gave the Bruins some
breathing room at 15-10. George Fox eventually stretched its
lead to eight at 19-11 following a Linfield attack error, and the
visitors got no closer than six thereafter. Burk's 10th
kill of the night concluded the match.
Setting up the Bruins' trio of double-digit killers were
Payton Shrum with 37 assists and Chelsea Wilson with seven.
Sturdevant finished with three aces. On defense, Wilson had
23 digs, Campbell 12, and Shrum 11, with Sturdevant just missing
double figures with nine. Burk, Sprowls, and Kylee Adderson
each had three blocks in the Bruins' total of seven.
Ritte-Camara, Victoria Thompson, and Suzanne Dahl had five kills
apiece to lead the Linfield offense, with Casie Gaza and Audrey
Frazier contributing 12 and 11 assists respectively. Courtney
Wanamaker had 20 digs and Ritte-Camara added 11.
The Bruins improved to 7-6 overall with their second straight
win and 2-3 in the conference while dropping the Wildcats to 4-8
overall and 0-5 in the league.
