Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – Unable to mount more than
one offensive threat against some tough ball control by Whitman
College, the George Fox University Bruins began the final weekend
of their 2013 women's soccer season with a 1-0 loss to the
visiting Missionaries in Northwest Conference action Friday here at
the Austin Sports Complex.
The Missionaries got the only goal they would need at 21:12 in
the first half. Kelsey Roehner initiated the scoring play
with a corner kick from the left, getting the ball to Sara
Sonnenblick who was standing nearby. Sonnenblick then sent
the ball to the middle of the box, where Jade Anderson snuck it in
between diving goalie Alyssa Montero and the near
post for her fourth goal of the season. They almost got an
insurance goal 10 minutes from the end, but Hallie Swan's
direct free kick from just outside the top of the box hit the
crossbar and bounded back into play.
Whitman made that single score stand up the rest of the way by
essentially playing 'keep away' from the Bruins.
The Missionaries controlled play in taking 20 total shots (11 in
the first half, nine in the second) while denying the Bruins one
lone scoring opportunity, that coming on a well-struck ball from
just outside the upper right corner of the box by Hannah Harder at
17:55 in the first half. Emily Davis made the stop in the net
and faced no more shots the rest of the game to record the Whitman
shutout.
Montero faced nine shots on goal and made eight stops for the
Bruins, raising her season total to 152, which leads the NWC and
ranks 33rd nationally. It is the third-highest total in
George Fox history, and her 447 career saves are third all-time for
the Bruins.
Whitman got five shots from Swan and four by Kelsey Roehner,
both with two on goal. The Missionaries also held a 7-1
advantage in corner kicks.
