Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – Michelle Young's third goal of the season with 1:30 left in regulation rescued George Fox University from yet another heart-breaking defeat and sent the game into overtime, where the Bruins and the Whitworth University Pirates battled to a 1-1 two-overtime tie in Northwest Conference women's soccer Saturday here at the Austin Sports Complex.
It was the final game of the season for both teams. George Fox, under first-year coach Cory Hand, finished with a 3-15-2 overall mark and placed ninth in the league at 1-13-2. Of the Bruins' 15 losses, five were by 1-0 scores, two of those in overtime, and another was by 2-1. Whitworth ended its season 7-7-6 overall and 4-6-6 in the NWC, finishing seventh in the standings.
While Whitworth wound up with a 33-14 advantage in total shots, both teams' defenses did outstanding jobs of keep the offenses from getting many quality opportunities, as the shots on goal were only nine for each team. As a result, the Bruins and Bucs fought through the first 75 minutes to a scoreless tie.
A header by the Pirates' Tiara Pajimola in the 34th minute hit the crossbar, and Bruin keeper Alyssa Montero made four saves over the next six minutes to keep the scoreboard clean. Pajimola again nailed the crossbar with a header in the 62nd minute, and George Fox finally got its first good shot in the 67th minute with a liner from Hannah Harder from the left sideline of the keeper's box that was stopped by Whitworth netminder Andrea Stump.
The Pirates broke the ice at 75:21 when Molly Smith sent a short cross from the right into a crowd in the middle of the box. Jackie Day momentarily got free in the midst of the scrum and sent a shot from the right into the left corner of the net for her third goal of the season to put the Pirates on top.
Pressing hard with as many potential scorers as they could get in the game, the Bruins secured the tie when all seemed lost. Jenna Prewitt sent a hard shot from outside the left side of the box toward the far post, and Stump dove to deflect it. The ball bounced away, however, and was corralled by Young, who sent it from about eight yards away just inside the near post at the 88:30 mark, sending the game into overtime.
The Bruins had their best chance to win with 1:24 left in the first extra period, but a well-placed header by Hannah Harder toward the left corner was snared by a lunging Stump. The Pirates' Molly Smith had a chance to win it with four ticks left in the second overtime with a shot from about five yards out near the left post, but Montero made a spectacular sliding stop to preserve the tie, the last of her outstanding George Fox career.
Each goalie made eight saves, Montero's giving her a conference-leading 160 on the season, the second time she has led the league. The only senior on this year's Bruin squad, the two-time honorable mention All-NWC keeper was honored in pre-game ceremonies. She ends her four years at George Fox third in career saves (455) and save percentage (.823 and seventh in shutouts (4).
