PALM DESERT, Calif. – Stretching their winning streak to five matches in a row, which equals the longest such streak in team history, the George Fox University Bruins knocked off the Biola University Eagles 8-1 in a non-conference men's tennis match Monday afternoon here at the Rancho Las Palmas Resort tennis courts.
The Bruins improved to 8-3 on the season and tied the school record for consecutive wins achieved by last year's team from Mar. 30-Apr. 21. That string was halted by national power Whitman College in the finals of the Northwest Conference Tournament. Biola, meanwhile, fell to 1-8 for the year.
George Fox's only loss to Biola came at the No. 1 doubles slot, where Justin McClain and Shawn Aldrich were edged by David Mossman and Isaiah Pekary 9-8 (10-5). Picking up the Bruins' doubles wins were Chris Lilley and Peter Brown over Chris Evans and Brian Cobian 8-4 at No. 2, and Preston Mann and Drew Milton over Brandon Chang and Rodric Pence 8-1 at No. 3.
The Bruins swept the singles matches but had to go to third-set tiebreakers in three of them. McClain edged Mossman 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-6) at No. 1, Aldrich had the closest one of all at No. 3 before winning over Chang 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 1-0 (11-9), and Chace Stalcup downed Pence 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 6.
Winning straight sets in singles were Lilley over Pekary 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2, Mann over Evans 6-1, 6-4 at No. 4, and Milton over Cobian 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5.
NEXT: George Fox, ranked No. 11 in the NCAA Division III West Region, was to play Vassar College at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday at the University of Redlands in Redlands, Calif., but that match may be canceled due to over-scheduling by Vassar on its road trip. George Fox coach Neal Ninteman said the Bruins would try to find a third opponent while on their southern California swing if the Vassar match falls through. If not, the Bruins' next match is set for Saturday at Linfield College, a 1:00 p.m. start as they return to conference play.
