PORTLAND, Ore. – Back on the courts after a two-week break, the George Fox University Bruins showed little evidence that the layoff had any adverse effect on their game as they doubled up the Lewis & Clark College Pioneers 6-3 in Northwest Conference men's tennis action Saturday afternoon here at the L&C Tennis Dome.
Extending their school-record winning streak to eight matches in a row, the Bruins improved to 11-3 overall and 9-1 in the NWC, equaling last year's records for most wins and most conference wins in a season. George Fox is ranked No. 10 in the NCAA Division III West Region. The Pioneers fell to 6-11 overall and 5-7 in the league.
The Bruins opened the match by taking the No. 1 doubles, Justin McClain and Shawn Aldrich defeating the Pios' Carter Gee-Taylor and Scott Monismith 8-2, and No. 3 doubles, Preston Mann and Drew Milton downing Ryotaro Tokura and Lucas Fodor 8-3. The Pios' Daniel Hahm and Cole Pfeiffer dropped the Bruins' Peter Brown and Chris Lilley 8-5 at No. 2.
George Fox clinched the match by winning the top four singles. McClain chopped down Hahm 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 at No.1; Lilley clipped Gee-Taylor 6-0, 6-3 at No. 2; Aldrich rallied past Monismith 2-6, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3; and Milton manhandled Tokura 6-1, 6-0 at No. 4.
Lewis & Clark picked up its singles wins in the final two matches. Pfeiffer topped Andy Tweet 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-2) at No. 5, and Fodor finished off Chace Stalcup 6-3, 7-5 at No. 6.
George Fox was scheduled to play the Division I University of Northern Colorado at 6:00 p.m. later Saturday at the Club Green Meadows in Vancouver, Wash., but due to a long-running women's match still going on at the same place, the GFU-UNC match was pushed back to later in the evening. Results will likely not be available until late Saturday or early Sunday.
