Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – With a pair of goals less
than two minutes apart early in the second half, the visiting
Pacific Lutheran University Lutes broke open a tight game with the
George Fox University Bruins and went on to a 4-0 Northwest
Conference women's soccer victory on a rainy Sunday afternoon
here at the Austin Sports Complex.
George Fox goalkeeper Alyssa Montero, who had posted 21 saves in
the Bruins' 0-0 tie with the University of Puget Sound on
Saturday, had four more saves in the first half against PLU before
the Lutes finally broke through. Jamie Hoffman sent a
well-placed cross from the left sideline into the box for Blake
Warner, who headed it into the right corner of the net at
40:48. It was her second score of the season and gave the
Lutes a 1-0 lead that they nursed into the second half.
Warner scored her second goal of the game at the 49:22 mark when
she recovered a shot attempt by Lauren Larson that rebounded off of
Montero all the way to the top of the box. She then punched
her third score of the season over the Bruin keeper into the upper
right corner.
The game got out of hand for the Bruins shortly thereafter when
a Bruin defender was called for a hand ball inside the box and
Larson knocked home the resulting penalty kick inside the left post
at 49:22. It was her third goal of the season. The
Lutes closed out the scoring at the 63:06 mark when Larson stole a
George Fox clearing pass and sent a through ball to Kaylie Rozell
near the right side of the box. Rozell then notched her fifth
goal of the year by sending it quickly to the far corner of the net
from 18 yards out.
PLU finished with 22 total shots to eight for George Fox,
including an 11-4 advantage in shots on goal. Larson and
Rozell led the Lutes with four shots each, and Warner joined each
of them with three shots on goal. Junoet Perkins and
Becca Allen made two shots each for the Bruins,
with four different players getting a shot on goal. The Lutes
also had a 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
Montero had seven saves in going the distance for the Bruins,
while PLU keepers Marisa Gonzalez and Takara Mitsui, who split
halves, had two saves each. Gonzalez was credited with the
win.
