Pioneers Edge Bruins In Close Match

PORTLAND, Ore. --- George Fox University didn't have to travel too far Wednesday night, as the Bruins took on next door neighbor Lewis & Clark College.

The Bruins (2-12, 1-3 NWC) fell to the Pioneers (7-6, 1-3 NWC) 17-25, 17-25, 25-23, and 18-25.

In the opening set, the Bruins hit .184 with 13 kills on 38 attempts. Erin Sprowls led the Bruin crew with four kills on seven attempts, hitting a booming .571. Delaney Cruz also had a nice opening set with four kills on nine attempts, hitting .444.

Both teams traded points back and forth in the second set, but the Pioneers started to peel away after scoring four-straight points. The Bruins started to claw at the scoreboard and gain momentum, but the Pioneers' lead held on taking the set, 25-17.

Erin Campbell led the Bruins in the second set hitting .125 with nine kills on 24 attempts. Sprowls, Cruz, and Kylee Adderson weren't too far behind Campbell with five kills apiece.

In the third set, it was the Bruins turn to take the lead and change the momentum around inside the gymnasium. The Bruins led early on and held on to the lead until the score was tied at 10-10. The Pioneers took the first lead of the set at 11-10, but the Bruins showing some tenacity pushed back and regained it at 12-10. That lead increased to 15-10 after a huge kill by Campbell.

After a long battle back and forth the Pioneers tied the game up at 21-21, but GFU's Erin Dellinger changed that around after landing a huge kill and block to give the Bruins a 23-21 lead. The Bruins finished the set with a huge duo block by Sprowls and Dellinger to take the set, 25-23.

The Bruins held the Pioneers to a team total -.038 hitting percentage.

The Bruins continued its momentum in the fourth set jumping out to a quick 3-1 lead. The Pioneers rallied back and got behind their crowd firing off five-straight points to take a 16-9 lead. Lewis & Clark added on to its five-straight points and jumped out to a demanding 20-10 lead.

GFU was led by both Campbell and Adderson on the night, as the duo combined for 23 kills. Payton Shrum finished the match with 36 assists and 12 digs. Campbell tacked on 23 digs and was the dig leader for the second match in a row.

The Bruins out-blocked the Pioneers 11-9 on the night. 

The Bruins will come back home Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m. when they host Puget Sound for a conference match-up.
