Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. --- Sarah Tuemmler scored the game winning goal Sunday afternoon, as George Fox University's women's soccer team defeated the Bearcats of Willamette University, 1-0.
The first period proved to be a defensive battle, as both teams were unable to keep a strong offensive presence. The Bearcats did manage to fire off 12 shots in the first, but couldn't put one by Bruin' goalkeeper Morgan Hansen. The Bearcats out-shot the Bruins 12-2, but the score would stand at nil-nil going into the half.
The second period opened up with the Bearcats gaining momentum and holding the Bruins on defense. After WU recorded 14 shots in the second period, the Bruins changed the game around taking back the momentum and putting the Bearcats on the defensive end.
The game would change for the better in the 87th minute after Tuemmler received a ball from Kacie Morgan just inside the box. Tuemmler then fired a shot to the left side of the net, and it slipped by the Bearcat' goalie to give the Bruins a 1-0 edge.
With the win, the Bruins improve to 3-8-3 overall and 3-6-1 in the Northwest Conference. In fact, the Bruins have won their last three out of four games they have played.
Hansen recorded the shutout and tallied 11 saves on the day.
George Fox will host Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, Oct. 25th at 12:00 p.m. followed by Puget Sound on Sunday, Oct. 26th at 12:00 p.m. Both games will be played at Austin Sports Complex.
