VANCOUVER, Wash. - With two members of their
regular lineup ailing, the George Fox University Bruins turned to
the depth on their roster and got solid performances from
Matt Deming and Andy Tweet in pinning a 9-0 defeat
on the University of Puget Sound Loggers in Northwest Conference
men's tennis action Friday here at the Club Green
Meadows.
Deming replaced Chace Stalcup, who was nursing hamstring
injuries, in both singles and doubles. Tweet stepped in for
Justin McClain, the Bruins' No. 1 player who finished doubles
but sat out the singles with lower back problems. Tweet
played at No. 4, with Bruins' usual 2-3-4 players sliding up
a notch.
In doubles, Deming teamed up at No. 2 with Preston Mann, and
they delivered an 8-4 win over Chas Stewart and Myles Rivera-Flam
that completed a George Fox sweep of the doubles matches.
McClain and Chris Lilley, the 11th-ranked duo in the NCAA Division
III West Region, downed Daniel Deuel and Jake Peterson 8-1 at No.
1, and Nick Grafton and Mitchell Miyashiro also won 8-1 at No. 3
over Colton Wright and John Stevens.
In singles, Tweet went down to the wire for a 7-6 (7-3), 2-6,
1-0 (10-8) victory over Abe Noyes at No. 4. Deming's
6-1, 6-2 win over Peterson at No. 6 concluded the match, which was
the last one to start due to only five courts being available to
the teams.
In the other singles, Lilley blanked Deuel 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1,
Miyashiro downed Rivera-Flam 6-4, 6-2 at No. 3, and Mann stopped
Stewart 6-4, 6-4 at No. 2 to give the Bruins their fifth and
match-clinching win. Grafton split sets at No.5 before
hanging on for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 triumph over Stevens.
