TACOMA, Wash. – Before turning their
attention to next week's Northwest Conference Men's
Tennis Tournament, the George Fox University Bruins tuned up for
the playoffs with a 9-0 blanking of the University of Puget Sound
Loggers to close out the 2013-14 regular season Saturday here at
the UPS Tennis Pavilion.
George Fox, ranked 12th in the NCAA Division III West Region,
finishes the regular season with an 11-4 record and a 9-3 mark in
the conference, leaving them in third place in the standings.
Puget Sound ends with a 3-13 overall and a 2-10 final conference
record, tying for seventh.
In the season-ending doubles matches, the Bruins won all
three. Preston Mann and Chace Stalcup defeated Chas Stewart
and Myles Rivera-Flam 8-6 at No. 1, Justin McClain and Andy Tweet
took down John Stevens and Jake Peterson 8-5 at No. 2, and Mitchell
Miyashiro and Matt Deming completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6
victory at No. 3.
In singles, it was McClain over Daniel Deuel 6-0, 7-5 at No. 1;
Mann over Stewart 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2; Miyashiro over Rivera-Flam
6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (10-7) at No. 3; Nick Grafton over Abe Noyes 7-5, 6-1
at No. 4; Andy Tweet over Stevens 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5; and Deming
over Jordan Meyers 6-2, 6-02 at No. 6.
NEXT: The Bruins will play the second-place
Pacific University Boxers on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in the opening
round of the NWC Tournament in Walla Walla, Wash., following the
match between conference champion Whitman College and fourth-place
Lewis & Clark College at 10:00 a.m. The winners will
advance to the NWC Championship finals, also at Whitman at 10:00
a.m. on Saturday.
