Bruins Host Boxers In Conference Match-Up

Box Score

NEWBERG, Ore. --- George Fox University's women's soccer team hosted its first conference match-up Saturday afternoon, as the  Bruins fell to the Boxers of Pacific University, 2-0.

George Fox now holds the record of 0-3-2 and 0-1 in the Northwest Conference. Meanwhile, the Boxers improve to 4-2 and 1-1 in conference play.

"Possession, passing, organization, ball movement, is all great and all, but at the end of the day what matters is scoring goals," said head coach Cory Hand.  "We strung together 5-9 passes in a row on a consistent basis and held a possession of 9% more than our opponent, but wasn't committed to being goal dangerous. Pacific, played a great game, had a game high of 4 passes completed in a row. They weren't committed to a good looking/diverse style of play. They did all they could to get the ball forward and attack the goal. Again, the game isn't won and lost in the passing, it by the amount goals you score."

The first period both teams came out trading possession back and forth, but the Bruins had the edge out-shooting the Boxers 7-6.

Becca Allen was the star of the day firing off six shots with four on goal. Sarah Werhane recorded two shots with both on goal.

Ally Swanson played all 90 minutes in the net and recorded 10 saves. Her best of the day was a header inside the box that she blocked off the top right side with a diving save.

"I'm very optimistic that our young team was able to have so many different offensive looks to goal and was able to hold and control the game with the ball at our feet," said Hand.  "I'm excited for the point in which our team becomes goal hungry, when all we want is that feeling when you bury the ball back in the opposing team's net. The soccer is there, the hunger is building. I'm excited for tomorrow already!"

The Bruins will host Linfield College tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. at Austin Sports Complex.
