NEWBERG, Ore. --- The women's volleyball team hosted the No. 1 team in the Northwest Conference standings, as the Pirates of Whitworth University came to town.
Recap:
Both teams tested the waters in the opening set, as neither team pulled away from each other. The score was tied five times, while the lead changed hands twice. The Pirates managed to sneak away from the Bruins at the 12-9 mark, going on a 5-2 run to take a 17-11 lead. Whitworth closed out the first set with a kill from Cassandra Mendoza to take a 25-21 victory.
The second set proved to be a little different, as the Pirates used their new found momentum to take an early lead and hold on. The score only changed hands once and that came in the opening points. The Pirates went on to win set two, 25-15.
The third and final set showed what kind of heart the Bruins really have. After witnessing a 12-1 rally from the Pirates, the Bruins would not go down without a fight. George Fox brought the score within seven, but it was too little too late, as the Pirates were able to keep their distance with a 25-16 victory.
Top Performers:
Erin Sprowls led the Bruins with nine kills, hitting .350 in the match. Payton Shrum recorded 18 assists and seven dis, while Erin Dellinger continued to impress with four blocks.
What Comes Next:
The Bruins (5-14, 2-9 NWC) will host Whitman on Saturday, October 24 at 5:00 p.m. to try to even up the weekend. Tomorrow night, the Bruins will be wearing pink to support the fight against cancer. They're selling cupcakes at the ticket tables for $1 dollar with proceeds also going toward cancer research.
