Bruins Chop Loggers in Four Sets

Box Score

By: Ryan Lackey

TACOMA, Wash. --- The women's volleyball team played an excellent four-set match, taking down Puget Sound, 3-1.

Recap:
The first set established the match's tone: gritty, back-and-forth, and hard-fought. A Puget Sound error early on gave the Bruins an 11-8 advantage, their largest lead until the set's conclusion, but the Loggers came back, and the score eventually stood even at 18-18. Then, an ace from Kristen Lane put the Bruins up one, and they never looked back, taking the set, 25-21.

Unlike the first, the second set saw the Loggers control much of the scoring. Finding themselves at one point down 11-15, a slicing kill from Dupray from a Payton Shrum assist seized momentum again for the Bruins, and, after the two teams traded points, another Loggers error put the Bruins within one, 20-21. Puget Sound, though, held off the Bruin advance and took the second set, 25-20.

Again, as the third set progressed, neither team could hold a wide lead. The Bruins went up 10-6, but a long Loggers run saw the score knotted at 14-14. From there, though, a fine run by Dupray and Sprowls let the Bruins coast through the end; Cassidy Scott's well-taken kill gave the Bruins the 25-18 win.

With an opportunity to seal the match, the Bruins opened the fourth set well on a 4-0 run. Afterwards, the Loggers, facing elimination, clawed back and never let the Bruins extend their lead beyond three. In fact, the score, as the set moved along, was tied at 10 11, 12, 13, and 15. However, the Bruins refused to let the Loggers hold any sort of advantage, and a pass from Kelsea Meyers to Dupray finished the set and match, 25-22.

Top Performers:
Dupray led the Bruins with 15 kills, posting a .222 percentage, but Scott was not far behind, notching 14 kills and a .206. Sprowls bagged 12 kills, hitting at .148, and Delaney Cruz chipped in seven. As usual, Shrum's distribution was excellent: she had 36 assists and put in a defensive shift, with 12 digs. Dupray and Kelsea Meyers paced the Bruins with 14 digs each; Acarey Rosa had 11.

What Comes Next:
The win boosts the Bruins to 7-14 and 4-9 in the Northwest Conference; the Bruins remain in eighth but are within striking distance of seventh-place Pacific. The Bruins can make up ground tomorrow, when they travel to Pacific Lutheran.
