NEWBERG, Ore. --- After coming off a crazy and historic match yesterday, the George Fox men's tennis team pulled off another crazy finish defeating Whitworth University, 5-4.
With the win, the Bruins improve to 2-1 on the season and 1-1 in the Northwest Conference. The Pirates on the other hand fall to 0-4 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
Co-captains Chace Stalcup and Chris Lilley started the day off strong taking down Whitworth's Blake Miller and Matt Goebel, 8-4. Stalcup and Lilley finished the weekend at 2-0 at the #2 spot with two solid performances.
"Chace and Chris gave the whole team a big boost and a ton of energy after their victory," said head coach Neal Ninteman. "They will be a driving force for us the rest of the season."
The Bruins went on to split the next two matches in doubles going into singles with a 2-1 lead.
Andrew You finished first for the Bruins at the #2 spot defeating Chris Engelmann 6-0, 6-0. Spencer Watanabe finished right after him with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. Watanabe finished the weekend just a hair shy of a perfect 4-0.
"Spencer was relentless this weekend," added Ninteman. "He played with passion and energy, and was a true inspiration to his teammates."
The match came down to Vincent Viloria at the #5 spot clinching the victory over Matt Goebel, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3).
"Vince made his freshman debut in conference this weekend and did so marvelously," said Ninteman. "He came away with a huge victory today, and finished his weekend at 3-1."
The Bruins will take to the road next week taking on Pacific Lutheran on Saturday, February 28th at 1:00 p.m. They will then play Puget Sound the next day at 10:00 a.m.
