Journey to the Tourney: Bruins On to the Final Four

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. --- The No. 3-ranked George Fox women's basketball team took down the No. 6-ranked Knights of Calvin College, 78-63, to advance to the NCAA Div. III Tournament Final Four for the third time in program history.

The Bruins (31-0) stormed to a 15-point victory over the Knights (30-1), and were led by Justine Benner and Jami Morris, who both scored over 20 points.

Benner now holds the record for most points scored in a single season with 511 points. She passed Hannah Munger who scored 502 in the 2010-11 season. As a junior, Benner had led the Bruins all year in points per game with a 16.5 ppg average.

Despite having home court advantage for the Quarterfinals, the Knights were unsuccessful containing the high powered Bruins, who jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead in the opening minutes.

George Fox turned its first half efforts into a 14-point lead at the 6:12 mark when Kennedy Hobert knocked down a jumper, 25-11. The Knights did manage to crack into the George Fox lead before halftime, going on an 11-6 run to bring them within six, 31-25.

The score changed hands only once in the first.

In the start of the second, the Bruins used a 14-4 run from 19:08 to 14:31 to take a 16-point lead over the Knights, 45-29. Every time the Knights tried to get some kind of momentum going on their side, the Bruins were right there to answer back. Going down the stretch, Calvin did in fact cut the deficit within double digit points, but the Bruins responded with a Jami Morris three to push the lead back up to 10, 53-43.

The Bruins were firing on all cylinders in the second half, shooting over 40 percent from the floor and 3-point line. In the final six minutes of the game the Bruins were able to get to the free throw line 13 times making 12 of them.

"I've never seen this team so determined to show another team what George Fox basketball is all about," said Morris. "We came out as the aggressors and never looked back. Our team is extremely tough and has a ton of heart, and I think that showed tonight against a very quality opponent."

Benner led the field with 27 points, going 13-for-15 from the free throw line. Morris was right behind her teammate with 21 points and four steals.

"Tonight was a great team win," said Lauren Codling. "Coming off a game yesterday where we didn't play the way we wanted, it was awesome to see everyone go all out for each other and play our game. Calvin is a great team and undefeated like us, so we knew we had to bring our A game and compete for 40 minutes. I'm so proud of this team and how we fought until the end."

Codling continued her dominance on the boards, recording 13 on the night. She now holds the record for single season rebounds with 343, passing Kristy Fleming at 330 in the 93-94 season. She also holds the record for single season steals at 105, passing assistant coach and All-American Keisha Gordon.

"I'm so proud of this team and how we came together tonight against a really good team," said Dacia Heckendorf. "We came out and played to our potential, taking each possession one by one. I feel very lucky to take the court with these women every night."

The host team released the Sectional All-Tourney Team and both Morris and Benner made the list. Morris was also named Most Outstanding Player in the Sectional.

With the win, the Bruins will advance to the Final Four, also hosted at Calvin College, and will play Montclair St. (30-1) on Friday, March 20 at 4:30 PDT.
