No. 2 Bruins Open Up 2016 With A Win

Box Score

PORTLAND, Ore. --- The No. 2-ranked Bruins of George Fox headed to Lewis & Clark College to open up 2016 with a comfortable road win, 59-44, Friday night.

Recap:
The Bruins were relentless in the first quarter, using their full court press and smothering defense to hold the Pioneers to nine points after 10 minutes of play. Justine Benner opened up the scoring for the Bruins with a hefty three in the corner, and Anjenae Torregano provided a huge boost off the bench with two back-to-back threes to give the Bruins a nice cushion.

George Fox continued to pour it on in the second, outscoring the Pioneers 11-2 in the first four minutes of play. The run didn't stop there, either, as the Bruins closed out the first half up by 27, 43-16. The Bruins outscored the Pioneers 24-7 in the second quarter.

The Bruins shot 53.3 percent from the 3-point line (8-15) and 48.3 percent from the field (14-29), while holding the Pioneers to a 16.7 shooting clip from the floor (4-24).

It was a quiet, but wild third quarter, as both teams had a tough time finding the bottom of the basket. In fact, the Bruins didn't score a field goal the entire quarter as all their points came from the free throw line. The Pioneers managed to go on a small run midway through the quarter, but with the Bruins leading by 20-plus points it proved to be too tough for the Pios.

After going 0-12 from the field in the third quarter, the Bruins turned it around and got back in the groove of things after Kaitlin Jamieson made a layup in the paint. The Bruins went nearly 15 minutes without scoring a field goal.

The Bruins closed out the game with a 15 point lead over the Pioneers, 59-44.

Top Performers:
Benner led the way with 16 points, going 5-9 from the field and grabbing six boards. Sammy Naluai was right behind with 13 points and seven rebounds. Kaitlin Jamieson was very close to a triple-double with eight points, seven rebounds and six blocks. Sade Elliott and Tooregano were a huge lift from the bench as they combined for 16 points.

What It Means:
The Bruins open up their second half of the season with a win and stay undefeated at 12-0. They are now 3-0 in the Northwest Conference.

What Comes Next:
With little rest, the Bruins host Pacific Lutheran on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in Wheeler Sports Center.
