SEATTLE, Wash. --- The George Fox men's tennis team continued their loaded preseason schedule, Saturday night, as the Bruins took on NCAA Div. I Seattle University in a competitive 6-1 loss.
Recap:
Spencer Watanabe and Chris Lilley were impressive from the start, as they competed side by side in the No. 1 doubles spot against Tanner Berkabile and Matt Alderson. The Bruin pair went on to defeat the SU doubles team, 7-6. It was a gut-wrenching effort by the Bruins, and another showcase of how strong those two are when they play together.
Watanabe also won at the No. 1 single spot for the Bruins, taking down Ian Clare (6-4, 2-6, 13-11). The Bruins put together a valiant effort against the WAC school (Western Athletic Conference), but came up just short.
Despite the score being in favor of the Redhawks, the Bruins played quite well against the Div. I Institution.
"Every day is a part of the bigger picture," said Associate Head Coach Steve Robertson. "It's about getting better every day, as tennis players and as men. We got some great experience today that we will use to continue pushing forward."
It should be noted that the score is recorded different at the Div. I level. Last August, the Div. I Competition Oversight Committee approved a no-ad scoring for all matches of the men's and women's tennis championships, starting in 2016.
Below explains the rules changes and how points add up for the final score from the NCAA website.
"As in the past, team scoring consists of three doubles matches played for one point, with six singles matches played for one point each. The first team to win four points overall wins the match. The matches will be played "clinch/clinch" – when the team doubles point is won, the remaining doubles match will be stopped. And in singles, once the team match has been won, any remaining singles matches will be stopped."
"All individual singles and doubles championships will be played utilizing no-ad scoring. In doubles, matches will consist of the best-of-three sets, with a match tiebreak in lieu of the third set."
What It Means:
The Bruins have played a very competitive schedule so far in 2016. Last week, the Bruins lost a tough 7-2 match to No. 30 UC-Santa Cruz, and took down NCAA Div. II Sonoma St., 5-4.
What Comes Next:
The Bruins will start Northwest Conference play next week when they go back to Washington to play against Whitman (Feb. 20) and Whitworth (Feb. 21).
