NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox women's soccer team hosted conference rival Linfield on Saturday, earning a hard-fought draw, 0-0.
Recap:
The game kicked off and turned into a possession battle quickly. It became clear early on that the two teams were evenly matched and the game would come down to toughness.
Both sides worked to create chances on offense in the first half, but both sides were ultimately unsuccessful. The Wildcats narrowly outshot the Bruins 5-3 in the first 45 minutes of play.
The second half turned out to be much the same story as the Bruins and the Wildcats attempted to find the chinks in each others' defense. George Fox defender Michala Denn took two shots early in the second period that missed just wide.
The teams struggled back and forth in highly-competitive second half, but neither side was able to score in 90 minutes of regulation play as the teams went into extra time. Daria Brandt and Annalisa Klein were instrumental in George Fox's holding scoreless a Wildcat team who are atop the Northwest Conference in scoring.
The Bruins had a flurry of chances in the second period of extra time. Chloe Shumaker had a shot on target in the 107th minute, then Brandt had a header shot a minute later that the Linfield goalkeeper just barely saved. Leanna Harris took one final shot in the final minute of play, but the Bruins were ultimately unable to steal the game late.
Top Performers:
Denn and Shumaker led the Bruins in shots, tallying two apiece. Klein had a phenomenal game in goal for George Fox, saving seven shots on the way to a shutout. Brandt was an anchor for the Bruin defense, leading the way on the team's fifth straight shutout.
What It Means:
The Bruins remain unbeaten, moving to 3-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play.
