Bruins Complete Season Sweep Of Pios Behind Headings' White-Hot Night

Box Score

By: Jake Bienvenue

NEWBERG --- The George Fox women's basketball team set the tone for the Northwest Conference on notice Saturday, hosting and defeating Lewis & Clark, 97-46.

Recap:

After conceding a pair of free throws early, the Bruins turned on the jets and scored eight unanswered. The Pios hit another shot, then the Bruins scored nine unanswered. The team was active on defense, coming away with five steals while holding the opposition to just six points in the opening frame. They put up 19 points of their own to take a sturdy lead.

The Pios cut it to single digits at the beginning of the second quarter, but the Bruins were again able to respond, this time with a 10-0 run. They led 29-10 with just under five minutes remaining in the half.

Senior sharpshooter Tavin Headings began to get hot, hitting back-to-back threes with around four minutes left in the period. Headings' ten second quarter points thwarted any opportunity for a pre-halftime surge by Lewis & Clark. That, and the fact that the Bruin defense was pesky enough for the Pios to turn the ball over 12 times in the second period alone.

Freshman Emily Dufour hit two quick shots to close out the half, giving George Fox a monster 47-17 lead at the break.

The Bruins showed no mercy out of the half as both the offense and defense kept their opponents around 30 points behind.

In a stretch that lasted under two minutes, Kylin Collman, Haylee Hutzler and Hailey Hartney all found the bottom of the net from deep, keeping the pressure on Lewis & Clark.

The Bruins shot 66.7% from the field and went 3-5 from deep in the third quarter.

George Fox continued to look sharp in the fourth. With a commanding lead, the home team was able to prevent any late runs that might jeopardize the win. The bench unit was able to come in and compete as well, giving the Bruins some solid minutes.

The team showed out on home court, winning 97-46.

Top Performers:

Headings continued her string of impressive games, putting up 20 on an absurd 9-11 from the field. Hartney scored pitched in 11 points on 4-5 shooting while stuffing the stat sheet all around, tallying three rebounds, four assists and three steals. Emily Spencer had 10 points to go along with five assists and Dufour finished with 10 as well. The Bruins had five players in double figures in the contest.
