SALEM --- The George Fox football team traveled south to face the Willamette Bearcats and notched its first road win of 2019 after a 61-13 effort on the road.

It was all Bruins early as everything came up navy and gold in the first half. Jaden Sheffey led an eight-play, 38-yard drive after a short Willamette punt and finished the drive with a two-yard touchdown run for a 7-0 lead after an Ethan Hoffman PAT to open the scoring.

Anthony Garcia put the next Bruin points on the board with a 60-yard runback after a Willamette punt arrived before the coverage could set up to contain him, and while GFU missed the PAT the Bruins still led 13-0 after the first.

After short-circuiting another Bearcat drive with a pick by Brandon Piete on defense, the Bruins marched 30 yards in three plays for a touchdown. Ethan Kassebaum capped the drive with a seven-yard rush for the TD and Hoffman added the PAT for a 20-0 lead.

The Bruins continued to stonewall their hosts on defense and added points on almost every drive of the opening half. A Josiah Schmidt rushing TD put six more points on the board and two tosses from Sheffey to Leon Johnson III made it 40-0 by the halftime intermission. Willamette did not cross the midline on offense until eight seconds remained in the first half as the Bruins' starters romped through the first 30 minutes of game clock.

With the starters getting only spot minutes in the second half, the Bruins continued to roll through the game with three more scores in the second half. Kassebaum added another scoring rush of 59 yards to start the second half.

Freshman Joshua Camacho found the endzone for the first time in his collegiate career later in the quarter to make it 54-0, and Faufano Autele punched his way into the endzone in the early minutes of the fourth to give the Bruins their ninth TD of the game in their best scoring output of the 2019 season.

Top Performers

The Bruins did the bulk of their work on the ground with 337 yards of rushing offense, getting a game-high 76 yards from Schmidt and 72 more from Kassebaum. Camacho added 57 and Wesley Riddell rushed for 36.

Caleb Dalzell led the team with seven tackles, including four solo and two for loss, while Brandon Piete came up with two picks in the win. Five Bruins recorded a sack of and Antwon Weary led the team in that department, registering a ten-yard loss on his QB sack in the win.

On special teams, Garcia added another TD runback to his season resume with the 60-yard touchdown return on a punt and finished 97 all-purpose yards.

What It Means

The Bruins move to 4-4 overall and are now 3-2 against NWC opponents with two games remaining on the season slate.
