NEWBERG --- The George Fox men's tennis program kicked off the traditional spring season hosting Portland State on Friday. The Bruins suffered their first loss of the dual season after being defeated by the Vikings 5-2.

Doubles

The Blue & Gold shook off the cobwebs to earn two comebacks after falling behind early in doubles play. According to head coach Jeff Cero, it was the guys' "great composure" that helped them stay in the game.

"We've put a strong emphasis on our doubles play," said Cero. "To see the way they bounced back was awesome."

The duo of Alex Namba and Will Leach snagged the 6-4 win in the No. 1 slot while Camden Camacho and Thierry Van Os battled hard for the 7-5 victory at No. 3.

Singles

Despite the tough play they exhibited, the courts were not in the Bruins' favor during singles play. Luke Lemaitre was the only Bruin to pull out a victory after defeating his Viking opponent 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 singles. Despite the losses, Cero knows his men will continue to improve as the season goes on.

"Everyone played very tough singles today, and all credit to Portland State for the way they battled back to win the match."

What It Means

With their loss today, the Bruins open their 2020 season with an overall record of 0-1. In spite of dropping the match, the men's team looks forward to the upcoming Idaho trip and to face more tough opponents.

What Happens Next

Fox heads to Whitman University to face Montana and Lewis & Clark State in two neutral-site matches on Saturday, Feb. 15. The Bruins take on Montana at 9 a.m. before going head-to-head with Lewis & Clark State at 5 p.m.
