HARTFORD, CONN. --- After a tough two-point loss to start the season in New York, the No. 24 ranked George Fox women's basketball team rebounded in a big way, taking down the Trinity (Conn.) Bantams, 68-56.
How It Happened
Trinity hopped out of the gates early, scoring off of the opening tip. The Bruins countered quickly, and four early points by Cassidy Posey gave Fox a 12-6 lead in the first. The scoreboard would stay quiet for the Bruins until Rachel Parks hit a three to give Fox a 15-11 advantage at the end of the first.
Fox dominated the second quarter, outscoring the Bantams 13-3 to open the period. During the run, the Bruins shot 60% from the three point line, and had five different players score while their defense held the Bantams to 14% shooting. At the halftime intermission, the Bruins led, 35-23.
Trinity pounced on the Bruins to begin the second half, cutting the Fox lead to four after only three minutes of play. The Bruins battled back thanks to Erin Yoshitake, who came off the bench and went on a quick 4-0 run of her own to give George Fox control of the game once again.
The fourth quarter saw the game stay at a ten-point bubble. George Fox, who had come out in a primary zone defense for the first time in Mike Coppolino's stint as coach, limited the Trinity offensive attack. The Bantams never cut the deficit to less than seven points, and the Bruins left Hartford with a 68-56 win.
Top Performances
Parks led the team with 12 points and chipped in two assists in rebounds as well. Through the first two games, Parks has made five threes at a 63% clip; prior to this season, she had only made three threes in her career. Alyssa Wells tallied 11 points as the second-leading scorer for the Bruins, while Jordan Ryan led the team in rebounds with nine.
Overall, 10 different players scored for Fox, as five bench players contributed 27 points. The zone defensive scheme held Trinity to a 29.8% mark from the field to earn the Bruins their first victory of the season.
Coach's Thoughts
"We really dug in defensively and made some big shots in key situations," Coach Michael Copplino said after the game. "I'm proud of this group and their resiliency playing in a tough road environment."
