Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox women's soccer team avenged an earlier loss in McMinnville with a 1-0 win over the Linfield Wildcats at home on Sunday, Mar. 14.
How It Happened
The two sides did the majority of their work between the 18s in the midfield in the first half, with scant scoring opportunities for either team. After the intermission, however, the Bruins' adjustments from coach Laura Schott made their way onto the pitch with more dangerous chances and steady possession in the Wildcats' end of the field.
That pressure paid off in the 67th minute after Claire Wright won a ball from the Wildcats' back line and slotted it home unassisted for the game winner. The Bruins kept up the pressure and had several other dangerous chances, but Wright's winner was enough for the 1-0 victory.
Top Performers
Wright brought energy off the bench and was able to score a goal on her birthday as a gift from herself to the team, while keeper Annalisa Klein and the Bruins' backs managed a great game to keep the clean sheet. Klein was never in a position of needing to make a save in the shutout.
Their Thoughts
"We made good adjustments in the second half and executed on pieces where we needed to in order to be more effective," said coach Schott after the win. "Defensively, we did a much better job of de-escalating dangerous opportunities. That's something we have been working on in practice and you saw our backs and midfield do a great job of preventing situations that could turn into dangerous situations."
What It Means
The Bruins improve to 2-2 on the season and in NWC action, while the Wildcats have suffered their first loss and fall to 3-1 on the year.
