Box Score

NEWBERG, Ore. --- Though the score may not reflect it, the George Fox women's soccer team opened the 2021 season with a dominant performance, shutting out the Lower Columbia College Red Devils 1-0 at Austin Sports Complex Wednesday night.
How It Happened
If not for an inspired performance by Lower Columbia's sophomore goalkeeper Kyla Pires, the Bruins would have won going away. George Fox peppered the Devils keeper with a dozen shots on goal, particularly pressuring the Lower Columbia defensive end in the second half with 17 of their 24 total shots in the game, outshooting the visitors 24-6 in the match.
Top Performers
Junior Claire Wright got the Bruins on the scoreboard in the 23rd minute, converting from close range at the right of goal for what turned out to be the decisive score. Senior forward Madison Burch put four of her five shots between the posts. Freshman keeper Bella Salazar turned away all four of Lower Columbia's shots on goal
Coach's Thoughts
"It was a typical first game with a lot of highs and lows," explained head coach Laura Schott. "Our team stuck together through the lows, weathered some moments, and we capitalized on others. Overall we played well and there is room for improvement so we are excited to keep building.
What It Means
The Bruins are off to a 1-0 start to the 2021 season after taking on LCC for the first time in program history.
Up Next
George Fox takes its talents to Ohio, facing Kenyon and Denison this Friday and Saturday. The women then return home to host the College of Idaho next Friday, Sept. 10. Kick-off is set for 5:00 p.m.
