Bruin Block Comes Up Big in Win Over Warner Pacific

9/1/2021 10:15:00 PM

Box Score

NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox volleyball team is not yet able to play on its home court due to ongoing renovations at Wheeler Sports Center, but the Bruins welcomed spectators for the first time since 2019 and opened the season with a 3-1 victory over the Warner Pacific Knights Wednesday at the Hadlock Student Center.

How it Happened

Utilizing a front line size advantage with six players 5'10" and taller, the Bruins' block was difficult for the smaller Knights to overcome. The Bruins took the first set 25-22, but the NAIA Knights responded with a 25-16 in the second set. The Bruins locked back in and claimed the third set 25-16 and finished off the match with a 25-20 result in the fourth set.

Top Performers

Kassandra Staton led the way with 12 kills, while Olivia Jacobsen was a force at the net with five blocks. "I think my mindset was play hard and do it in the name of the Lord and we did that tonight," said Jacobsen. Kennedy Kibby dished out 28 assists, while Piper Harrop paced the Bruins in digs with 11. Warner Pacific senior Grace Buchanon led the match with 18 kills, but the Knights were unable to record a scoring block.

Coach's Thoughts

"Tonight was a great opportunity to test lineups," said head coach Emily Davis. "I was really proud of some young players for giving us energy when we needed it in this match."

What it Means

The Bruins home victory was their first in front of fans since closing out the 2019 campaign with a three-set sweep over Whitman on Nov. 9.

What's Next
The Bruins are set to begin the early-season invitational circuit, going on a 10-game road trip starting this weekend in southern California, where they will play four games at the Pacific Coast Classic.
