Bruins Win First Set, Fall to Whitworth in Tough Match

Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. --- After starting with a 25-22 first -et victory, the Bruins fell to the Whitworth Pirates by a score of 3-1, losing 16-25, 23-25, and 18-25 over the next three sets.
 
How It Happened 
 
The Bruins rallied from down 17-22 in the first set, scoring eight straight points to take a 1-0 overall lead. A kill from Outside Hitter Addison Robertson cemented the comeback for the Bruins. The Pirates responded, however, and took the following three sets in close matches.
 
Top Performers
Sophomore Kassandra Staton put on an impressive performance, recording 13 kills and a team-high 19 digs. Senior Sophia Davies got the first set comeback underway with an ace, while sophomore Kennedy Kibby recorded two aces.
 
Offensively, Staton and Robertson led the way, scoring 15 points and 14 points, respectively. Robertson, a freshman from Olympia, Wa. playing in her seventh collegiate game, recorded a team-leading 14 kills for the Bruins. 
 
Coach's Thoughts
 
"It was definitely an off night, but I'm excited that we still have room to grow and a lot of matches left to play," said Bruin head coach Emily Davis, "Whitworth has a great team this year, and I'm looking forward to playing them again."
 
What It Means
 
The loss snapped a two-game winning streak and dropped the Bruins to a 5-2 record with a 0-1 Northwest Conference record.
 
Up Next
 
With Wheeler Sports Center unavailable until October due to a court refurbishment, George Fox will be on the road for six more games before hosting the Linfield Wildcats on Saturday, October 9. Their next game will be Walla Walla as they take on the Whitman Blues this Saturday, with a start time scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
