NEWBERG, Ore. --- The George Fox doubles team of Will Leach and Luke Lemaitre advanced to the championship round, and Leach looks to defend his singles title for the second-straight tournament after a successful third day of the ITA Northwest Regional Championship.
How It Happened
Of the six Bruins that played their way into the round of 16, four advanced into the singles semifinals. Leach and Lemaitre both won in commanding fashion and on opposite sides of the bracket, leaving the potential for an all-Bruin final. Both will face Pacific Boxers in their semifinals.
"Will and Luke played extremely well today," said head coach Jeff Cero. "It's easy to take their greatness for granted, as they make showing up prepared for big matches look very easy. They both have a great chance tomorrow."Â
Rox Rogers almost defeated the No. 1 seed in singles, Pacific's Reyn Miyagawa, but lost a close match.Â
"Rox played extremely well and dug deep. I was very proud of the way he turned around the 3rd set after Reyn began to get into a groove. He gave himself a good chance to get back and take the match, but Reyn also did a great job closing the match with some huge shots."
All four Bruin doubles teams have competed tremendously this weekend and earned the right to play in the quarterfinals on day three. Leach and Lemaitre were the only Bruin duo to survive the round, however, defeating teams from Whitman and Pacific on their way to the final. The two will go up against Boxers Quentin Gonzalez and Aidan Rooney.
"Doubles was bittersweet, to say the least," Cero continued. "Will and Luke continued to step up when they needed to and played a tough match against Joey Hu and Koby Murata, who played extremely well. Fortunately, we managed to come out on top. That was about the only bright spot of the day; Pacific's doubles as a whole played better than us, with more intensity, and with more hunger than we did. We have a lot to work on."
