Bruins Romp Past Lions For Second Straight Home Win

NEWBERG, Ore. --- The Bruins men continued to accelerate down the onramp toward the upcoming Northwest Conference schedule with a convincing 4-1 victory over the Multnomah University Lions Sunday at Austin Sports Complex. George Fox dominated possession and had a 19-6 advantage in shots on goal, putting eight on the frame to improve to 2-0 on the season. Multnomah dropped to 0-3 with the defeat.
How It Happened
The Bruins tallied first in the 15th minute, when Sean Beuckens recovered a deflected Johnny Keblish shot and skimmed a low strike inside the right post for his first goal of the season. The Bruins made it 2-0 in the 30th minute after Brennen Martin relieved a Multnomah player of the ball and centered a pass to Connor Kong, who drilled his second goal of the year with a powerful strike into the upper left corner of the goal.  With a 10-2 advantage in shots at the break and goalkeeper Alex Muir untroubled through the first 45 minutes, the Bruins kept the pressure on in the second stanza. After two shots wide of the mark in the first two minutes, Multnomah responded with a scoring strike in the 53rd minute, the Lions' first shot on frame in the match. Shortly after a Muir save, the Bruins scored on a quick counter. Isaac Nakayama played the ball through the legs of a Lion defender on the right side, centered the ball to Selamab Gizaw, who flicked it to Alan Rincon at near the left post for a finishing touch. The Bruins polished off the scoring in the 74th minute when Multnomah failed to effectively clear a Kong cross from the left. Kyle Revell pounced on the opportunity and scored from straight away, just inside the penalty box.
Top Performers
Revell has now scored in each of the first two regular season matches for George Fox. Muir saved three shots to improve his record to 2-0.  "It was great to see everyone step into the role they were asked and perform as well as they did," said Muir. "From top to bottom, they made my job easy today and it was great to see them battle for the full 90. We still have a lot of growing to do as a group, but it was an awesome result and response all around."
Coach's Thoughts
"This was the first time we have been able to have film and really prepare for an opponent and the players did a fantastic job all week," said head coach Paul Karver. "Their system created a number of issues for us and the adjustments we asked the players to make required good decision-making and they did a wonderful job of that to get the four goals. We still need to find a way to hold onto a shutout and be more disciplined at times. Moving forward we will get punished by teams if we don't clean some things up."
What It Means
The Bruins continue to build steam after some weaknesses were exploited in their final exhibition tune-up against an NAIA foe. The competition will increase from here on out.
Up Next
George Fox's final two preseason matches come against Division III in Santa Cruz, Calif. this weekend as the Bruins face La Verne Saturday at 11 a.m. and then play the host team UC Santa Cruz on Sunday at 2 p.m.
