Bruins Stay Unbeaten After Draw In Defensive Bout

NEWBERG, Ore. -- George Fox tied in a tight match with the Linfield Wildcats on Saturday, 1-1, keeping their undefeated season alive.

How It Happened
The first half was scrappy and hard-fought, a common theme for the afternoon. The Bruins put one through in the 36th minute to take a 1-0. After a cross from Hayven Richardson, an attempted header by a Linfield defender and several deflections sent the ball into the goal for Fox's first score of the game. The Bruins were aggressive throughout the half, with seven corners and five shots.

The Wildcats controlled possession for the majority of the second half, and the consistent pressure led to a Linfield goal in the 65th minute. The Bruins remained aggressive and had several chances to take the lead as time wound down. With ten seconds left, a foul by Linfield gave the Bruins one last chance, but after a scramble the ball rolled out for a goal kick, ending the game in a draw.

The defense was on full display throughout the game, with the Bruins holding the Wildcats to just eight shots and only two shots on goal. The Bruins continued their trend of outshooting their opponents so far in the young season; there has yet to be a game this year where they have been outshot.

Top Performers
Senior Maggie Phillips led the way with six shots and three on goal. Alexis Breer had three shots for the Bruins, and Hannah Beardemphl had one. Beardemphl was in on the action, applying pressure to the keeper during Linfield's own goal.

Coach's Thoughts
"It was a tough one today," Bruin head coach Laura Schott said, "We had higher expectations for our performance and Linfield did a good job of taking advantage of their opportunities. When's tie feels like a loss you know your team has been taking steps forward in culture and expectations. We look forward to a strong performance versus Lewis & Clark tomorrow."

What It Means
The Bruins remain unbeaten on the year, moving to 5-0-2 (3-0-2 NWC), Linfield is now 2-4-2 (0-3-1 NWC).

What Happens Next
The Bruins kick off their three-game road trip tomorrow in Portland, against Lewis & Clark at noon.
