McMINNVILLE, Ore. -- Two goals from the Linfield Wildcats were too much for the George Fox women's soccer team to overcome, as they fell on Saturday afternoon.
How It Happened
The Bruins controlled possession at the beginning of the game, with two shots in the opening minutes before the game became aggressive. There were 14 total fouls in the first half before Linfield struck with a goal. After
Maggie Choate's shot was blocked, the WIldcats' quick counterattack resulted in a goal from Kamahie Samudio.
Alexis Breer looked to counter the Wildcat goal, but her shot from distance was saved by the Wildcats. It would be one of two shots on goal taken by the Bruins in the half and one of three on the day.
The second half followed nearly an identical script to the first. After the Bruins managed to generate shots, the Wildcats struck on a quick play. Once again, it was Samudio, who broke past the back line for a breakaway goal to extend the lead to 2-0, and lead they would keep for the remainder of the game. The Bruins' best opportunity of the second half came off of a Choate corner, where
Becca Kozak's header was wide. Fox had one shot in the final 15 minutes, a Choate shot that sailed wide.
Top Performers
Both of Breer's shots were on goal, the highest on the day for the Bruins. Kozak totaled four shots with one on goal, and
Maggie Phillips attempted six shots; the Bruins outshot the Wildcats 15-8 in the afternoon. Defensively,
Bella Salazar and
Zirce Valeriano split time in goal, with Valeriano recording two saves.
Coach's Thoughts
"We've been creating very good chances and playing well for large parts of games," Bruin coach
Laura Schott said, "It's not the overall game that resulted in a loss today. We are growing as individuals and a team and we are experiencing some growing pains at times and absolutely performing at others. Credit to Linfield they celebrated their srs in style and had a great performance."
What It Means
Fox falls to 8-3-4 on the season with a 6-3-4 Northwest Conference record, while the Wildcats sit at 5-6-6 on the year with a 3-5-5- NWC mark.
What Happens Next
After a three-game road trip, the Bruins return to Austin Sports Complex for a three-game homestand to finish the season. The homestand starts with an Oct. 30 game against Lewis & Clark. The game is scheduled to begin at noon.
