NEWBERG, Ore. -- Senior Maggie Philips broke the George Fox single-season goal record with two goals against Lewis & Clark, and the Bruins ended the weekend with a 2-1 win over the Pioneers.
How It Happened
Philips was on the cusp of breaking the single-season scoring record for most of the past few weeks, and she finally broke through today in the 36th minute. Philips took a penalty and zipped it past the keeper to give the Bruins the lead and herself the record. Just four minutes later, the senior scored again to pad the Bruins' lead and put an exclamation mark on the half for Fox.
"Congrats to Maggie,'' Bruin head coach
Laura Schott said, "She's been chasing it and I'm happy for her and her accomplishment. It is also a testament to the team whenever an individual breaks a record, so I'd like to acknowledge our team's performance this season overall."
Phillips herself added to her coach's comments after the game.
"[I'm] happy to get the record and add another goal on top of it, "the senior said," The best thing about it was how hyped my team, the fans and coaches were for me. It's amazing to play for this team and I'm excited to build on it next weekend."
The Bruins held the Pios to zero shots in the half, taking ten themselves; it was the first time this year they have held a time to zero shots in a half. George Fox put seven of their ten shots on target, bombarding Lewis & Clark's defense.Â
In the second the Pioneers got one shot past the Bruin's defense, but nothing else. Fox's defense did enough to fluster the Lewis & Clark offense — despite being outshot 8-6 in the half, they only faced three shots on goal. The Bruins had three shots on goal for themselves in the half, and held off the Pios for a 2-1 win.
Top Performances
Maggie Philips' 17 record-setting goals have all been vital to the success of the team all season, as was the case today. Phillips' two goals came in only 39 minutes of action on Sunday in her first game off the bench this year.
Coach's Thoughts
"Lewis & Clark is a good team and well-coached, so they always present us with a tough game," Bruin head coach Laura Schott said, "I loved our start and our grit thru the second half to earn the three points."
Becca Kozack also added three shots on goal, and
Zirce Valeriano had two saves in the first start of her career.Â
