NEWBERG, Ore. - George Fox played the 15-1-2 Pacific Lutheran at home, losing after three second-half goals by the Lutes.
How It Happened
In a defensive struggle in the first half, the Bruins found a way to get a goal across in the first, after a header from
Maggie Phillips directed over to
Becca Kozak for the goal. With her back to the goal on a free kick, she sent it backward past an unsuspecting Lutes defense, giving the Bruins the early lead.Â
The Bruins' defense withstood seven shots from the Lutes, as Fox was outshot in the half 7-2.
Zirce Valeriano kept the Lutes off the scoreboard with an incredible, diving save in the 33rd. In what was expected to be an offensive bout, the defense of the Bruins shined at the end of the first,Â
The Lutes' aggressive offense broke through in the second half, however, scoring three goals in the frame. They scored all three of their goals in a stretch of fewer than ten mins, scoring in the 52nd, 57th, and 61st minutes. The Bruins couldn't answer the bombardment of goals, resulting in the final score of 3-1. In the second, George Fox outshot Pacific Lutheran 8-7, with five shots on target.Â

Becca Kozak scored the lone goal for Fox, Maggie Philips had one assist. Keeper Zirce Valerino tallied four saves.

"The top team in the conference is better at attacking corners and scoring crosses than we are at defending corners and defending crosses," Bruin head coach
Laura Schott said after the game.
What It Means
Going into their final game tomorrow the Bruins are now 9-4-4 (7-4-4 NWC), while the Lutes improve to 16-1-2 (13-1-1 NWC).
