Box Score SALEM, Ore. -- The Bruins played suffocating defense, and the offense's relentless second half led to two late goals to beat the Willamette Bearcats in Salem 2-0.
How It Happened
The first half featured a defensive bout between the two teams, with George Fox only allowing four shots with three shots on goal. Bruins goal keeper
Madeline Bailey had three saves in the half, and the Bearcats struggled to get past the Bruin's back line. Fox had nine shots in the half, with three on goal, but went into the half tied 0-0.
After the break, the Bruins pushed the ball into the attacking third and stayed there for what felt like the entire second half. Fox shot the ball 21 times in the second half, with six on goal. Fox frustrated the Bearcats all afternoon long, leading to 16 fouls called on Willamette, as opposed to 10 on Fox.Â
The never-ending pressure applied to the Bearcats finally paid off in the 72nd minute, when
Hayven Richardson passed the ball into the box, where
Maggie Phillips slid in front of a Bearcats defender and knifed the ball past the keeper for the first goal of the day. Then just five minutes later Philips sent the ball into the box again, where
Becca Kozak scored on an impressive one touch shot. Kozak and Phillips' goals would be enough as the Bearcats found it almost impossible to get the ball past midfield for most of the half, recording just one shot the entire half.
