Johnson III named First Team AFCA All-American

12/13/2022 8:58:00 AM

WACO, Texas -- Star George Fox wide receiver Leon Johnson III keeps racking up the awards.

After being named the Northwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year, NWC First Team, and D3Footballl.com All-Region, Johnson III was named to the AFCA Division III Coaches' All-America First Team on Tuesday morning.

The AFCA has selected an All-America team since 1945 and currently selects teams in all five of its divisions. The AFCA's Division III All-America Selection Committee is made up of three head coaches from each of the AFCA's eight districts, one of whom serves as a district chairman, along with another head coach who serves as the chairman of the selection committee. The coaches in each district are responsible for ranking the top players in their respective districts before a conference call between the district chairmen and the committee chairman on which the team is chosen.

"Again, all individual awards originate from the overall success of the team." Bruin head coach Chris Casey said, "With that said, Leon is deserving in every way of being a First Team All American Wide Receiver."

The senior wideout set numerous records in 2022, breaking the record for most all-purpose yards (1,205), most receiving yards (1,154), most receiving yards in a game (174), most receiving touchdowns (14), most receiving touchdowns in a game (3), most receptions (55), and most receptions in a game (11). The standout season helped the Bruins finish with a program-best eight wins on the year.

Johnson III is the second Bruin to be named to an AFCA All-America team after lineman Nolan Schuler earned a second-team honor in 2017. The Bruin wideout is one of two NWC players to be named to a team, along with Linfield offensive lineman Matt Metcalf, who also picked up first-team honors.

"[Leon] is an outstanding football athlete with excellent speed and super hands, is a fierce competitor, and plays the game with tremendous effort." Casey said of his star wideout, "Above and beyond this, Leon is a great teammate, a very high character person, and a top student. On behalf of our coaching staff and players, we offer every congratulation to Leon Johnson III whom we feel was the best Div. III receiver in the nation this past season."
