HOBOKEN, N.J. -- The George Fox women's basketball team held their own in the first half against undefeated No. 7 Scranton but were ultimately overpowered in their 47-80 loss.
How It Happened
The Bruins were forced to play catch-up early, as Scranton jumped out to a nine-point lead within the first five minutes of the quarter. However, Scranton's offense fell silent toward the end of the quarter, allowing the Bruins to get back within striking distance. After an 11-point unanswered streak by the Bruins, they were only five back at 20-15 going into the second quarter.
The second quarter saw both teams trading blows with one another. At one point, the Bruins had trimmed the lead to only four, a 23-19 deficit, but the Lady Royals wrestled away control of the game. At the end of the quarter, the score going into halftime stood at 37-27 in favor of Scranton.
The Bruins closed the gap to seven points after a
Jenna Lacey layup but got no closer. Fox shot 4-18 in the quarter as Scranton jumped out to a 59-37 lead going into the final quarter.
Fox was able to get back a couple of points at the beginning of the quarter but never closed the gap significantly in the fourth, as Scranton shot above 60% from the field and pulled ahead to win, 80-47.
Top Performances
Erin Yohsitake led the Bruins in scoring with 15 points, shooting 5-13 from the field including four triples. Alongside Yoshitake,
Jenna Lacey collected eight points on 4-7 from the field to aid the Bruins' offensive effort. Defensively,
Alyssa Wells and
Ella Roberts snatched three and two steals respectively, while
Emily Stephens had four defensive rebounds.
What It Means
The Bruins move to 4-6 overall (1-1 NWC), while Cal Lutheran improves to 11-0.
What Comes Next
The Bruins conclude their road trip tomorrow as they take on Stevens on day two of the Stevens Holiday Classic. The game is scheduled to begin at noon.
