NEWBERG, Ore. --- Facing a tough NCAA Division I foe in UC Irvine, the Bruins fought hard but fell 9-0 in their 2022 season opener at home.
How It Happened
The Anteaters swept doubles with an 8-0 score at the first flight and two 8-2 finals at the second and third flights. Freshmen Cassey Hitch and Kalli Wiker combined at the second flight to earn two points in their match, and Olivia Morris paired with Abigail Bond at the third flight.
In singles, the Bruins were able to be most competitive in flights three through six. Wiker made it difficult at the third slight in a 3-6, 3-6 defeat and Emily McDonald played her fifth singles matchup to a 4-6, 2-6 loss. Brenna VanderYacht mirrored that effort with a 2-6, 4-6 fight at the sixth flight, and Morris went 2-6, 1-6 at the fourth spot in singles lineup.
Coach's Thoughts
"For our first match of the year I thought we competed really well against a very good team," coach Rick Cruz said afterward. "I believe we'll only get better as our players gain more experience. I'm excited to get back out there next weekend!"
