PORTLAND, Ore. --- The George Fox women's tennis program picked up its first win of 2022 after defeating the Lewis & Clark Pioneers, 6-3, in a non-conference preview of the upcoming NWC matchup.

How It Happened

George Fox jumped ahead with two wins in doubles play to start the match on strong footing. Danielle Brown and Kalli Wiker notched a hard-earned 8-6 win in the number one doubles matchup and were the last to finish their battle. Ellie Mangan was reunited with her 2021 doubles partner, Olivia Morris, and the duo made short work of their foes in an 8-3 final to finish first. Abigail Bond and Cassey Hitch were defeated, 8-5, at the third matchup but fought hard and acquitted themselves well.

The Pioneers won the first two singles matchups, but Fox took 3-6 to finish the match as winners. Morris scored the Bruins a team point with a well-earned singles win at the number three matchup. Her first set called for a few extra swings, 7-5, but she bounced back and won the second set 6-1 to close it out.

Brenna VanderYacht won the number four matchup 6-4, 7-5 and showed tenacity to clinch her matchup in a back-and-fourth battle.

Bond officially clinched the match for Fox with a win at number five, out-dueling her opponent 6-4, 6-2 to get the team victory sewn up. Cassey Hitch capped the day with a number six singles win in another dogfight, 7-5, 6-2.

Coach's Thoughts

"It was a great team effort; everyone came away with a win in either singles or doubles which should help build confidence moving forward," coach Rick Cruz said afterward. "It was great to see Abigail play well and clinch the match with her best tennis of the spring so far. I'm excited to see how much better we can get moving forward!"

What It Means

Fox is now 1-1 with plenty to build on going forward.
