CLAREMONT, Calif. --- George Fox baseball bounced back from a tough Saturday showing with a 5-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Sunday, Feb. 6, to wrap up its first road trip of the season. The Sagehens out-hit Fox five to nine, but three errors sunk their chances as Fox capitalized on those mistakes.
How It Happened
Travis Miller got his first start of 2022 and worked into the sixth before exiting with his name on the books as a potential game-winning pitcher. Miller got plenty of support at the plate and his teammates kept the pressure on the Sagehens' pitchers with throughout the afternoon to get him a win.
Fox struck first after getting Jared Miller home with a walk, two stolen bases, and a wild throw into left field on an attempt to get him out at third base in the first inning.Â
After carving out an early 1-0 lead, the Bruins tacked on three more by the bottom of the third after a two-run shot from Jayce Lien in the second and some good base-running from Brandon King in the third plated a single run in the frame.
The Sagehens answered with single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings to make it 4-2 after six scoreless half-innings, but the Bruins added an insurance run in the eighth to ice the game. Spencer Roos wore a pitch and took second on a wild pitch past the catcher before scoring on a fielder's choice from Lien.
After Andrew Sutherland took over in the middle innings and kept the game quiet, Alex Abbott came on in the ninth to close the game. Abbott allowed two baserunners to reach before ending the game with a called strike three on a full count to close the game, 5-2, in favor of Fox.
